After months of leaked details and images, Apple officially announced its largest and thinnest iPhones to date at the company's iPhone 6 event on Sept. 9. The iPhone 6 sports a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with a resolution of 1334 x 750, a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi) and is ultra thin at 6.9 mm.
Apple also unveiled its first phablet with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 Plus boasts a 5.5-inch Retina HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, a pixel density of 401 pixels per inch (ppi) and is 7.1 mm thick.
Apple will begin taking preorders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on Sept. 12 and the smartphones will go on sale on Sept. 19. A new website called iPhone 6 in 3D has been created to allow users to compare the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus right in their browsers. You can choose an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus in choice of Space Gray, Silver, or Gold and compare it with an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or iPhone 5s in all three colors or against a credit card to give you a better understanding of the size difference and color options of the new smartphone and phablet before they hit stores.
As a reminder, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus ship with a Retina HD display and are powered by an Apple A8 64-bit processor and M8 motion coprocessor. The Retina HD displays offer higher contrast for deeper blacks and use dual-domain pixels to achieve more accurate colors at wider viewing angles.
Both models are packing an all-new improved 8-megapixel iSight camera with a new sensor with Focus Pixels, improved face detection, and exposure control. The camera allows users to capture 1080p HD video at 60 fps, continuous autofocus, 240 fps Slo-mo at 720p. A new FaceTime HD camera now captures 81 percent more light and its new Burst mode take 10 photos per second to help selfie lovers get the best shot possible.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus include Touch ID and NFC for Apple Pay, the company's new mobile payment system.
Apple claims the iPhone 6 will provide up to 14 hours of 3G talk time, 11 hours of HD video and Wi-Fi web browsing, and up to 10 days of standby time. The iPhone 6 Plus will provide up to 24 hours of 3G talk time, 14 hours of HD video, 12 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing, and up to 16 days of standby time.
Apple is offering the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in three storage configurations; iPhone 6 16 GB ($199), 64 GB ($299), 128 GB ($399) with 2-year contract. iPhone 6 Plus 16 GB ($299), 64 GB ($399),128 GB ($499) with 2-year contract.
