Pope Francis has died at the age of 88.

The Vatican shared the sad news, announcing that Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 a.m. on Monday.

Many mourned the loss of the pope and took to social media to share their sorrow and condolences.

In a statement by Cardinal Kevin Farrell and shared by the Vatican, it was announced that Pope Francis has indeed passed away.

"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis, the statement read. "At 7.35am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.

"He taught us to live the values ​​of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized," the statement added. "With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."

Almost immediately, Pope Francis began to trend on social media platforms such as X as users took to their accounts to share their sadness and condolences over his passing.
