The next-generation Apple smartwatch, dubbed Apple Watch 2, may come with some changes, but rumors suggest that it will retain the same size, shape and display resolution.
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, announced the Apple Watch in September 2014 and the wearable hit stores in April this year. The Apple Watch is available in two sizes, 38mm and 42mm, and comes in a rectangular shape.
The 38mm Apple Watch comes with a 272 × 340 pixel resolution while the 42mm smartwatch has a 312 x 390 pixel resolution. Both Apple Watches have 326ppi.
Many smartwatches are available on the market, but only a few are available in a circular form, such as the Motorola Moto 360. Many wearable lovers would have hoped to see the next-gen Apple Watch sport a circular dial. However, according to Korean publication Naver, the upcoming Apple Watch 2 will not get any significant changes in terms of size, shape and resolution.
LG was the sole glass screen supplier for the Apple Watch. The Naver report also suggests that Samsung will also produce the OLED glass screen, along with LG, for the Apple Watch 2.
Reports claim that instead of reducing the weight of the Apple Watch 2, the smartwatch maker will be focusing on making the display module thinner to accommodate a bigger battery.
The Apple Watch has to be paired with an iPhone to make or receive calls and texts. However, the Apple Watch 2 may be a standalone device and will not require being paired with an iPhone to make and receive calls or texts.
The Samsung Gear S, on the other hand, is one of the few wearables that allow for a SIM card to be inserted in it and get 3G data without the need of a phone. Some customers may hope for a similar feature in the next-gen Apple Watch as well.
It is highly likely Apple will announce the Apple Watch 2 this fall. Customers will have to wait a few months before Apple releases official details of the upcoming smartwatch.
