It's no secret that the CW's biggest hits are all based on DC properties. Arrow was an unlikely success, one which used a C-Grade character and somehow transformed him into a respectable hero.
The Flash proved that an interconnected TV universe could work, and successfully expanded upon DC's smaller-scale projects. While other DC projects fail to gain any traction on other networks (sorry, Constantine), the series on the CW continue to succeed.
Of course, if one spin-off has already become a success, then who's to say a second couldn't succeed? The Flash became a hit in less than a single season, and there are plenty of characters to go around in this new DC television universe - there's no reason why another spin-off wouldn't work.
That's exactly what DC's Legends of Tomorrow is: the CW's second spin-off series features a number of both Arrow and Flash characters in something of a Justice League Lite - and the first previews have just hit the web.
The series' cast is basically a calling card for CW's side characters: Brandon Routh returns as The Atom, Dominic Purcell as Heat Wave, Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold, Ciara Renée as Hawkgirl, Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, and Victor Garber as Martin Stein. Caity Lotz is also set to return, despite already being dead, though she's traded the Black Canary persona for the White Canary.
The CW also released the show's official synopsis:
"Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (Darvill) is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat-one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?"
While yet another spin-off may sound like a bit much, the CW has proven time and time again that it can do DC's characters justice. The show may not have the same name recognition as something like The Flash, but neither did Arrow - and, with any luck, DC's Legends of Tomorrow will be just as good as the shows that preceded it.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow is set to debut in early 2016.
