The popular video game franchise Tekken has one of the most insane lore in the gaming world with a recurring father vs son narrative that involves a lot of throwing someone on the cliff.
And the upcoming Tekken 8 is shaping up to be another father vs son story with Jin Kazama taking on Kazuya Mishima. But if you have been following the series closely and how its storyline plays out, you know that there is one key person in this father-and-son rivalry: the mother.
In fact, the mother is back. Jun Kazama will be one of the playable character in the much anticipated Tekken 8.
Mother is Back
After more than 10 years since her last appearance in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in 2011, Jun Kazama is back on the main game series!
She was first introduced in the Tekken series in Tekken 2, which was released in 1995. Jun was a wildlife conservation officer and a mother to Jin Kazama, the game's main protagonist.
Her moveset was based on Aikido, a Japanese martial art that emphasizes throws and joint locks, and she quickly became a fan favorite due to her graceful fighting style and compassionate personality.
Jun Kazama's storyline continued in Tekken 3, which was released in 1997. In the game's story mode, it was revealed that Jun had disappeared, leaving Jin Kazama to grow up alone.
Jin entered the third King of Iron Fist Tournament to avenge his mother's presumed death, but he eventually discovered that she was alive and that she had been kidnapped by Ogre, a supernatural being seeking powerful fighters to consume their souls.
Jun herself did not appear in Tekken 3, but she played a major role in the game's story and her absence drove much of the plot. However, last appearance was in Tekken Tag 2 Tournament, where she was playable and also served as the final boss with her alter ego "Unknown"
She was presumed dead by fans since then but with Tekken's gameplay trailer, we now know that she is alive and is set to "cleans this world of its evil and corruption."
What is Jun's Role in Tekken 8?
In the trailer, Jun was seen in a confrontation with her former love interest Kazuya. Like most of the fans, he was also shocked to learn that she was alive all along.
Although the dialogue between Kazuya and Jun makes it seem like it might occur in the game's story mode, it is also possible that it will only be a pre-fight interaction in the versus mode.
Hence, fans are still wondering what her return could mean to the whole Tekken 8 lore.
It is expected that the game will continue the ongoing saga of the Mishima family, which has been a major focus of the series since the first Tekken game was released in 1994.
Tekken 8 is currently being developed for Xbox Series, PS5, and PC.
