Physics-based vehicle soccer video game Rocket League will soon be not just a car football game. Psyonix, the game developer and publisher, says that it will add a basketball-themed mode to Rocket League this year.
Psyonix released Rocket League for Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in July 2015. The Microsoft Xbox One version of the game was released in February 2016.
"Rocket League is [a] futuristic sports-action game, in which players are equipped with booster-rigged vehicles that can be crashed into balls for incredible goals or epic saves across multiple, highly detailed arenas. Using an advanced physics system to simulate realistic interactions, Rocket League relies on mass and momentum to give players a complete sense of intuitive control in this unbelievable, high-octane re-imagining of association football," says Rocket League.
The basketball theme, probably called Rocket League Hoops, may attract more gamers.
Psyonix did not reveal much about the new theme but posted a screenshot of the mode on Twitter.
This is not the first time that Psyonix has chosen a sport other than soccer for Rocket League. In late 2015, the game developer added a new playlist to the game, Snow Day, where gamers could play ice hockey with the cars. The Snow Day mode was available for free, and hopefully the upcoming basketball-themed mode follows suit.
The release date of the upcoming basketball mode remains unclear. However, Psyonix suggests that the upcoming mode is linked to the March Madness basketball tournament. The first round of the tournament starts on March 15, which means that the Rocket League basketball-themed mode will arrive sooner than later.
The growing popularity of Rocket League has led Psyonix to develop different modes for the video game.
Earlier in March, the game developer also announced the first official Rocket League Championship Series, which has a price pool of $75,000.
"You can register in teams of three for a chance to win the very first Rocket League Championship. The three-month season kicks off with open qualifiers and we'll have a total prize pool of $75,000 USD for the first season. All matches will be played on the PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, with additional platform support to be revealed in the future," says Psyonix.
