Rocket League became one of the undisputed indie title hits of 2015, so much so that the wacky soccer-racing crossover has now stepped into eSport territory.
Video gaming platform Twitch teamed up with the game's developer, Psyonix, so fans can gather round for an official Rocket League Championship Series.
The first season debuts in March this year with a prize pool amounting to $75,000. Two qualifier rounds will take place, and the team that wins each of them walks away with $10,000 in its pocket. The live international finals will take place after a short time-off period, and will give a neat $55,000 in cash to the winning team. The competition will last for three months.
When compared to other established eSports such as League of Legends or Counter-Strike, the prize is a mere trifle. However, it should be noted that the new speedy game is merely in its beginnings, while the aforementioned titles have a solid history in the gaming world.
It is safe to assume that Rocket League has a lot of space for growth, and involving Twitch in the upcoming event should help bring the game closer to the public's attention.
Teams of three can start registering for the open qualifying round on March 25. Gamers from North America and Europe are asked to put their driving skills and goal scoring to the test, as the top four teams from each region move on to the international finals.
The first tournament permits only Windows PC and PlayStation 4 players to enter the competition. Although the game landed on Xbox One in February, owners of the Microsoft console will not get to enroll in the tournament. As a mild consolation prize, they can watch the matches via Twitch.
Just to summarize, Rocket League is just about what you'll probably imagine when you hear the words "car soccer." In the game, two teams of up to three players buzz around each other in an effort to place a huge ball into the opposing team's net. While gamers use (famous) human players to score in franchises such as FIFA, in Rocket League gamers control the ball via remote-controlled cars.
