Game developer Psyonix is still considering ways to increase the maximum player count in Rocket League, but for now it's quite a big challenge.
In an interview on Major Nelson's latest podcast, Psyonix announced that it is open to the possibility of boosting the game's max player count and make it reach even higher than eight. Currently, it is capped at 4v4.
Rocket League, compared to a regular football game which has up to 11 players, has a fairly decreased number of player count options. The game allows from 1v1 up to 4v4.
The 3v3 game experience is already deemed as pretty intense while the 4v4 mode is considered a nerve-wracking affair.
According to Jeremy Dunham, VP of Psyonix, the company has already experimented with bigger player counts. However, for now the idea of increasing the game's player count is "too crazy."
Dunham continued by saying that 3v3 is considered as the "sweet spot" for the game. Other options include 1v1, 2v2, and the "unfair mode" which has been so-called due to its 1v2, 1v3 and 1v4 options.
When Psyonix confirmed in July last year that it is releasing a pair of DLC packages for the game, there was a mention of a 3v4 team ranked mode as one of the gaming highlights.
Another detail that is worth mentioning is the free map DLC pack that is said to be Utopia-inspired. The map will reportedly feature the regular form that is in stadium style as opposed to the circular form that was used in the past.
Dunham did mention that boosting the max player count is more likely to occur only if larger arenas are released.
He added that perhaps the company will revisit the idea one day, should it decide to pursue with bigger stadiums. For now, however, a player count that is higher than 4v4 seemed infeasible and can even diminish a bit of the enjoyment from playing the game.
In the meantime, Psyonix also announced the launch of Rocket Labs this month, which will feature a playlist for players to try out new maps prior to their release in competitive playlists. Initially, the playlist contains three new entries which are deemed to have standard sizes and are just big enough to accommodate the current player counts.
