'Game of Thrones' wine to be released in 2015

It's a long way off until season five of "Game of Thrones" debuts, so it seems like a good time to knock off with a drink. Yes believe it or not, a "Game of Thrones" wine will be released in 2015, just in time for the next season.

The smash hit show will inspire a new line of fine wines good enough for the House of Lannister. The wine-swilling cast would be proud to down these new drinks at most trial-by-combat events.

"The reds are all associated with the houses that are strong and robust," Jane Burlop of Common Ventures told The Drinks Business. "The whites on the other hand are more cunning, perceptive and mysterious."

This new wine is in addition to the "Game of Thrones" beer line that was launched by Ommegang Brewery of Cooperstown, New York. According to Gothamist, "The Wines of Westeros" is set to launch next year to coincide with the premiere of season five in April. The set will include twelve choices that stretch from Shiraz to Sauvignon Blanc, and each is paired up to one of the houses of Westeros.

While this is not the first foray into 21-and-over beverages for the show, this line looks to cater to the fantasy series enthusiasts. It is sure to be a hit with the Cosplay crowd that dress up as our favorite characters from the monster smash show.

"Game of Thrones" continues to gain momentum, even in the "off season" as new fans come aboard to catch up on the first four seasons. The line of wines is a perfect match for fans of the show and seems to be a natural progression as the program continues to grow.

The lore of the show and attention to detail looks to stretch itself to this new line of wine as the "Game of Thrones" brand gets bigger and bigger. It does seem apropos that a wine would be released as it is rare to see anyone drink anything but on the show. The niche market is there, and it will be up to Common Ventures to cater to the die hard fan.

“Whether this becomes a coveted item for the fans or a bottle opened with every episode, this wine is made to be drunk with friends and to help soften the blow of the shock and heartache as our favourite characters are slowly killed off," Burlop said.

While the wine will surely be a hit with fans, it is difficult to gauge how it will go over with wine enthusiasts. Surely the makers of the wine are looking to snag both crowds with their offerings. So raise a glass and toast to Westeros.
