A Kickstarter campaign has been started for a new 3D-printable interlocking game system called Dragonlock, which essentially allows users to create their own gaming terrain.
The system was made by Fat Dragon Games and was designed to be usable for a number of different war games and role-playing games. Users can 3D print their own pieces and then connect sections to other sections, essentially making a board with which they can play.
In fact, it seems like the system has gained quite a bit more than its original goal. With a goal of a rather low $500, the campaign has made $35,126 at the time of this writing. It still has 18 days to go.
Perhaps some of the popularity of the system is owed to how accessible it is, with customers being able to pledge a range of money for legitimate prizes. For example, $10 will get the user a starter set, which comes with seven pieces, including two wall designs, a corner wall, a floor tile, a doorway, a stone pillar and a staircase. It also comes with clips to put everything together. Prizes range up to $60 and include a pack with a much longer list of pieces.
Most of the kits come with PDF and STL files, enabling users to actually print their own pieces. Of course, they won't come with the 3D printer needed to print the pieces.
The decision to create a Kickstarter campaign came because of the fact that the company didn't want to put money into a system that didn't go anywhere.
"One or two poorly selling sets would hurt our company severely. By putting potential projects up on Kickstarter, we can be sure if there is demand for that subject before devoting our resources to it," said the company of its campaign.
