New 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Character Has A Strange Beastie Boys Connection

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is apparently where hip-hop collides with a galaxy far, far away. A newly introduced character named Ello Asty purportedly sports an easter egg throughout the movie in the form of text on his helmet, an homage to none other than the rap group the Beastie Boys.

Even though the text seems rife for interpretation -- it could, indeed, just be a wash of random hieroglypic-like symbols -- the fact that the name "Ello Asty" sounds a lot like the Beasties' fifth studio album Hello Nasty, which, among other tracks, features some pretty incriminating evidence: the single "Intergalactic."

Not much is known about the character; some fans have even speculated that he might be the equivalent of Wedge Antilles for the updated franchise, whose limited screen time in the canonical movies lead to a multifaceted, further characterization in the Star Wars expanded universe. What we do know about the character is limited to cursory information, namely that he is "a skilled if occasionally reckless X-wing starfighter pilot for the Resistance."

While there are no official images of the character, a 6-inch figurine will be available for purchase in October. Indeed, the photo of Ello Asty is from the back of the box for the action figure -- but considering the merchandise can more or less be taken as canonical due to George Lucas' merchandising rights.
