Even the most crazed and loyal Star Wars' fans might do a double take at this.
An original Star Wars stormtrooper helmet used in The Empire Strikes Back fetched $120,000 in an auction in London on Wednesday (September 23), as reported by The Wrap. That's $30,000 more than the item was originally predicted to go for in the planned Prop Store's Entertainment Memorabilia auction. The stormtrooper helmet is believed to be one of the few to exist in the hands of private collectors.
"The collection auctioned yesterday was phenomenal, and we're thrilled to see these pieces of history head to new loving homes," Stephen Lane, Prop Store founder and CEO, told The Wrap. "A huge thanks to our partners Odeon and the BFI for hosting the momentous occasion. We're already making plans and accepting consignments for our next auction."
Other items sold included: Katsumoto's armor from The Last Samurai ($73,000), the Leeloo Dallas multi pass from The Fifth Element ($64,000), and The Witch King's dagger from The Lord of the Rings ($55,000).
It's hard to believe that May 25, 2017 will mark the 40th anniversary of the original Star Wars release. Suffice to say, memorabilia from the original film that may hit the auction block around that time will go for that much more.
Until then, though, fans of the series await the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is scheduled to hit theaters December 18.
