If you purchase next month's special Back to the Future trilogy Blu-ray set being released in honor of the original movie's 30th anniversary, you're going to get a little something extra.
Actually, you're going to get a whole bunch of extras — but one of them in particular looks pretty special. A new short film starring Christopher Lloyd will be included with the Blu-ray called Doc Brown Saves the World. We know nothing about the plot (aside from what the title suggests), but Universal Home Entertainment has posted a teaser for it, which you can watch below.
What's more, Universal's description of the collection suggests that more than one original short film will be included. Our guess is that it's the Christopher Lloyd short in multiple parts — but that's pure conjecture.
As for the Blu-ray, you of course get all three Back to the Future films both on disc and digital, but it's the extensive list of extras that we want to draw your attention to. An entire additional disc is devoted to more than two hours of bonus content. Here's a look at what they include:
• Outatime: Restoring the DeLorean: In 2012, the DeLorean underwent a restoration, and this documentary chronicles what it took to remake the classic time machine. • Looking Back to the Future: a 9-part retrospective on the legacy of the films, originally released in 2009. • Tales From the Future: a 6-part documentary about the movies. • The Physics of Back to the Future: a short docu on the science portrayed in the films. • Q&A with Michael J. Fox • 2 episodes from the 1991 Back to the Future: The Animated Series — "Brothers" and "Mac the Black" — both of which include live-action segments starring Christopher Lloyd. • 8 "archival featurettes" (i.e., old mini-documentaries). • Additional behind-the-scenes footage. • Deleted Scenes. • Audio Commentaries. • Music Videos (presumably Huey Lewis & the News and ZZ Top). • A look at Back to the Future: The Ride. |
In related news, Telltale Games is offering a 30th Anniversary Edition of its Back to the Future: The Game, which originally released in 2010. The story-driven, episodic adventure game featured a new storyline set six months after Back to the Future Part III, which kicks off with the DeLorean suddenly reappearing in Hill Valley without a driver.
The anniversary edition is remastered for new-generation consoles, and updated with new voice work for Biff Tannen, from original actor Tom Wilson. New content has also been added in the form of behind-the-scenes interviews with Telltale team members; Wilson; the game's Marty McFly, actor A.J. LoCascio; and trilogy co-writer Bob Gale, who's unofficially credited with creating the franchise.
Back to the Future: The Game - 30th Anniversary Edition will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on October 13, 2015.
Back to the Future Trilogy: 30th Anniversary Special Edition will be in stores on October 20, 2015.
