According to Gotham's promo for episode three of the new season, it looks like fans are getting the confirmation they've been anticipating since the introduction of Jerome Valeska (played by Cameron Monaghan) in season one: that Jerome Valeska is one of DC's most notorious villains, the Joker.
Titled "The Last Laugh," the episode comes right after the return of Jerome the UnJoker and the Maniax, his team of slightly psycopathic criminals, post-Arkham prison break. The Maniax also includes Barbara Kean (Erin Richards), protagonist and future Gotham PD Commissioner Jim Gordon's (Ben McKenzie) former fiancée; her inclusion has lead some to speculate that she might indeed be the future Harley Quinn, solidifying Jerome's possible status as the Joker even more.
Here is the episode's official synopsis:
"Gordon and Bullock track down a nemesis from the past, leading to a standoff between Jerome (guest star Cameron Monaghan) and Gordon. Meanwhile, a magic show at the Gotham Children's Hospital gala turns into a hostage situation."
To reiterate, while there's no formal, ceremonious announcement that Jerome is indeed the Joker, especially hinted by his maniacal, patented laugh, the use of what appears to be Joker Gas, and the glimpses of the hospital setting in the promo, elucidated by the episode summary — it's hard not to think that Gotham is referencing Heath Ledger's take on the villain when he blows up the hospital in The Dark Knight.
See the Joker have his last (or first?) laugh in the promo clip below.
