'Gotham' Showrunner Confirms Court Of Owls Appearance On Series

In a recent conversation with ComicBook.com, Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller discussed and confirmed an upcoming story arc about the Court of Owls.

It may not come as a huge surprise that this iconic part of Gotham City's mythology will make it onto the show, but it is something that Batman fans have clamored for since the first episode. It also makes sense to include this particular storyline because the Court of Owls fits so well into the setting of the Fox television series.

In the DC comic books, the Court of Owls consists of the wealthiest families of Gotham controlling the city as a secret society. They have a team of villains, who all wear owl masks and do their dirty work.

The introduction of the wealthy Galavan siblings this season almost feels like it's setting up a Court of Owls storyline, so ComicBook.com asked Heller about the possibility of seeing this part of Batman's story on television. Of course, Heller did not spoil anything about who or what the Galavans are, but he did confirm that we'll see the Court of Owls at some point during Gotham's run.

"We are absolutely going to explore that world down the line," said Heller. "Looking at the longevity of the show, we have to hold some cards back, we can't just throw all of the elements, all of the story at once. The long arc of the show is Bruce Wayne's journey of discovery down into the depths of the physical and meta-physical world of Gotham. The Court of Owls is a brilliant conceit that will absolutely be part of our storytelling. I just won't tell you when."

So Heller has confirmed the Court of Owls, but viewers will have to wait and watch to see if the group appears this season. It's likely that the series is just setting up Gotham for the arrival of the Court, but already last season, viewers learned that a group of people have infiltrated Wayne Enterprises. Could they be the first members of the Court of Owls? Do they work for or with the Galavans to control the city? And why exactly did the Galavans break out the villains locked up in Arkham Asylum? What is the siblings' end game?

Perhaps we'll learn more this season: Gotham airs Mondays on Fox.
