It's all about the villains: that's what Fox keeps telling us about the second season of its hit series Gotham. And the network has even given us some villain announcements for the show's second season, as well as teasers for others that viewers can expect to see.
But which villains will put in an appearance and threaten Gotham with their dastardly deeds? And which villains will return from season one to partake in the debauchery?
Here are the villains we know of so far that will make an appearance on season two of Gotham.
Penguin
At the end of last season, Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, finally got his revenge on Fish Mooney and became the last villain standing in the war that threatened the city. This puts him in charge of Gotham, and obviously he, as portrayed by actor Robin Lord Taylor, will return for the second season. However, things won't go smoothly with Cobblepot's takeover of the city. In fact, it's likely, some fresh blood will come along to threaten his position in the city.
"When you're at the top in Gotham City, you have a giant target on your back, whether you're on the good side of things or if you're on the bad side of things," said Taylor earlier this year at Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con. "That's the thing about Gotham City: when you make your way to the top, there's always someone there to bring you down."
Catwoman
We haven't actually seen Catwoman yet, because Selina Kyle is still a teenager, but it's likely we'll see more of her younger self (Cameron Bicondova) as she and Bruce Wayne continue to work together to find out who killed his parents. She's already halfway there: Selina's already got the moves and her street clothes resemble the typical Catwoman costume.
Riddler
Last season saw Ed Nygma (Corey Michael Smith) finally embracing his darker side. Although he hasn't officially been referred to as the Riddler yet, his love for riddles, as well as his name, makes him the likely candidate to take up the mantle of this iconic villain. Season two will likely show him even more frustrated over Kristen Kringle, who ignores his romantic advances, which will drive him even further down the Riddler road.
Two Face
Back in May, reports came in that Fox added Harvey Dent (Nicolas D'Agosto) as a series regular for Gotham. Will he become Two Face this season? That's still up in the air, but we'll see more of Harvey as a character in season two.
The Joker
Last month, Fox started releasing trailers for the upcoming season of Gotham, with Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) featured heavily in some of those promos. Of course, he's not the Joker yet, but the clips shown so far make it seem as if he might soon embrace his Joker persona: he's already got the laugh. As he says in the following promo, "you ain't seen nothing yet."
Tigress
Tabitha Galivan (Jessica Lucas) will play a part in the second season of Gotham, as the sister of Theo (James Frain) who now runs Arkham Asylum. And of course, Tabitha's brother plans on using the inmates to gain power within the city. Of course, we still don't know how she plays into that plan, but it's obvious that she and her brother are about to bring Gotham to its knees.
Firefly
Fox recently announced that it cast Michelle Veintimilla as Firefly for Gotham season 2. Although Firefly is male in the comics, Gotham decided to make the character female for the TV series. Here's the official description for the character:
"Enslaved by her brothers, a notorious gang of arsonists, Bridgit Pike is forced into the family business. When she catches the eye of Selina Kyle, the young Catwoman and the soon-to-be-Firefly team up to put Bridgit's firestarting skills to good use. But after a deadly encounter with the Pike Brothers, the meek Cinderella is transformed into a vengeful supervillain, hell-bent on destroying those who have wronged her."
Mr. Freeze
There hasn't been much mention of Mr. Freeze appearing in Gotham's second season, but Taylor mentioned that the notoriously icy villain will definitely make an appearance. Gotham executive producer John Stephens confirmed that, stating that we'll see how Mr. Freeze became a villain this season.
"We always want to walk the fine line of the reality of our world," said Stephens at WonderCon in April. "Walking right up to that line where supervillains live. So there are a lot of characters from Batman lore that fit that bill. People like Victor Freeze, who's a science villain. You can play a lot of his abilities without going into the world of superheroes."
Clayface
Clayface is another villain mentioned for season two. However, we still don't have many details about that, as well as which version of Clayface from the comics we'll see: the character could even have a completely different origin story. There are also four versions of the character in the comics, with one being female, so who knows what Gotham will go with? The network hasn't yet released an announcement about casting Clayface, though, so we probably won't see the character appear until later in the season.
Mad Hatter
Mad Hatter has always been a fan favorite for an appearance on Gotham, and both Taylor and Stephens confirmed that we'll see him pop up in season two. Again, there hasn't been a casting announcement about the role, so like Clayface, it will probably happen later on. In the comics, the Mad Hatter is a crazy scientist who uses technology to control people's minds: that will definitely make things interesting for Jim Gordon and crew in Gotham City.
Recently, Fox released a Gotham trailer teasing "The Rise of the Villains," offering a sneak peek at some of these villains in action and what we can expect in season two.
Gotham season two premieres on Fox on Sept. 21.
