If you didn't already get the memo that this season of Gotham is all about the rise of the city's most notorious villains, then you certainly got the message Monday night. The first episode of Season 2 just aired and was clearly dedicated to the over-the-top bad guys from the Batman universe, as well as a few new bad boys and girls created by Gotham's writers.
That rise of Gotham's villains continues next week, at least according to a new promotional teaser that shows more details about the Galavans' plans for taking over Gotham City. Of course, the trailer also includes that signature laugh from Jerome (played by Cameron Monaghan), teasing once more that this is the young man who will eventually become the Joker on the series.
Monaghan recently explained his character in Gotham's Season 2 in more detail.
"It's not clear whether he wants to be a leader, or if he just can't help but destroy every single thing around him," said Monaghan to KSiteTV.com at the Gotham premiere. "His personality is just this constant ticking time bomb."
Jerome makes the bold statement in the video that "you ain't seen nothing yet" while dressed as a police officer.
Barbara, Jim's ex-girlfriend, is now in prison, too, so it looks like she'll be one of the villains set loose if the Galavans' scheme goes according to plan.
The clip also shows Jim Gordon reaching out for help and getting it courtesy of Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis), who has a shared interest with Gordon in cleaning up Gotham, but is way more invested in doing things by the book than Gordon.
"The problem is that Gordon's going to discover that, although they might be soul mates in their desire to change Gotham, Capt. Barnes is much more committed to the law," said Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller to The Hollywood Reporter. "He's a stickler for it; he'll do anything within the law, but that's a hard edge for him."
Heller explained that Gordon sees more gray areas when it comes to the law and that this perspective will eventually lead to the two men having a falling out.
As already seen in the first episode, this season is less focused on the typical Gotham City stories than last season – with the various mafias controlling the city – and more focused on letting the inmates out of the asylum, who are more over-the-top than anything viewers have seen yet from Gotham... hence the "Rise of the Villains" teaser videos Fox continues to release in promoting Gotham's second season.
Gotham airs on Fox on Mondays.
