Mighty No. 9 Release Date Set Feb. 9: What To Expect From Mega Man Successor?

Mega Man, err, Mighty No. 9 has been locked into a February release after being pushed back in 2015 to a previously unspecified 2016 release window.

The Mighty No. 9 Team announced on Friday that the spiritual successor to Mega Man will launch on Feb. 9 in North America and on Feb. 12 worldwide.

"Comcept and our partners at Inti Creates and Deep Silver have been hard at work clearing up any remaining issues with the online modes included in Mighty No. 9," the team states. "As a result of their progress, we are now able to officially announce our release date!"

Mighty No. 9 first emerged when Keiji Inafune, Mega Man and Dead Rising designer, and company took to Kickstarter to find support in reviving the spirit of Mega Man without leaning on the original intellectual property that's still secured by Capcom.

Thanks to the succesful Kickstarter effort, Mighty No. 9 will be available on just about every dedicated gaming platform that's still around right now. It'll release on PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS Vita and Wii U.

Mighty No. 9 is being designed to quench the thirst for Mega Man, which began for some people as far back as 1987 when it was first released on NES. A Mega Man game was last published by Capcom in 2010.

Standing in for Rock, the orginal Mega Man Android, is Beck. Like Rock, players will guide Beck up and under platform in this 2D/3D platforming game.

Beck looks a lot like Rock, though the new Android relies heavily in its ability to absorb enemy's energies. Similar to Kirby, Beck's absorb ability allows him to leverage powerup from the enemies he eats.

Those who backed Mighty No. 9 can get a better idea of what the game plays like by downloading the demo, which is available now, DRM free, on HumbleBundle.

"We are extremely sorry for the delay in delivering this demo to you, but we hope you enjoy your time with it," states the team. "Also, as a result of switching to DRM-Free distribution, there is obviously not a cut-off date for this demo. You are also welcome to stream or record gameplay videos to share with your friends and followers!"
