We've always wondered why Warner Bros. didn't follow Marvel and allowed the DC Extended Universe to tie in with the universe on TV. We finally got an answer for that, and we tend to agree.
DC Entertainment boss Diane Nelson sat down with Variety to talk about a lot of things. The matter of the shared universe topic came up, and Nelson had to give an answer, one that might quell this argument for good.
According to Nelson, it is all about creative control, something that might be difficult to achieve should DC movies and TV shows come together as one.
She stated that the DC universe "could end up handcuffing our creators into trying to work with the same storyline or force them to hold back characters or introduce certain characters. Ultimately it hinders the ability for someone like [showrunner] Bruno Heller to come in and create Gotham."
If we look at Marvel and what it has done with its cinematic universe, things are not perfect. The shows on TV always tend to reference the movies in one way or the other, but when it comes down to the movies referencing the TV shows, we've never seen it.
It makes us wonder why Marvel Studios even decided in the first place to bring the TV shows into the same universe. We can see that doing so may have caused for more people watching the shows, but the overall concept is flawed.
For example, in Agents of Shield, our beloved Agent Coulson is alive, but this was never mentioned in the movies. We see the Inhumans coming to life on Agents of Shield, but this was never talked about in the movies.
At the end of the day, DC Entertainment is on the right path. The movies should be separated from the TV shows at all times. The concept looks good on paper, but once it is brought into existence, it is nothing but a mess in the grass waiting to be cleaned up.
