Did Jesse Eisenberg just take a shot at Marvel? He probably did in his explanation of what type of superhero movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is.
The actor sat down with Today to promote his new book, Bream Gives Me Hiccups. He was, however, also forced to talk about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Eisenberg was asked about his role, Lex Luthor, in the Zack Snyder-directed movie. He stated that the character is incredible and that the film is not a "cartoonish superhero movie."
That's a direct shot at Marvel right there because—let's face it—Marvel films are all cartoony, outside of the Captain America movies, arguably.
"Yes, it is like the most incredible character," Eisenberg shared. "It was written by this guy, Chris Terrio. This is like his first movie after Argo. He's just this brilliant writer of characters. So this movie is not this kind of cartoonish superhero movie. It is a very serious and well-acted, well-written, well-directed movie. It's really phenomenal!"
We're sure this will cause a few Marvel fans to act out in anger, but it is not as if the man is lying.
The "cartoonish" superhero movies are doing well commercially, and as such, Marvel Studios should stick to this path. However, for the sake of differentiation, Warner Bros. must take the DC Extended Universe on a different road. Failure to do so will increase the chances of superhero movie fatigue.
Remember the era of Western films? These projects were barely different. A man rides a horse and shoots a gun. He is either the hero or the villain, and that's basically it. Now and again, a damsel in distress might show up, or many times Native Americans were the bad guys.
Too much of the same formula will destroy a genre, so Marvel Studios, Disney, and Warner Bros. all need to be mindful of the future.
