New images and details have leaked regarding Samsung's "premium" Galaxy F smartphone. The handset is packing a 5.3-inch 2560 x 1440 QHD display, quad-core processor and brushed metal rear cover.
LG was able to beat Samsung in releasing a smartphone with a 2560 x 1440 QHD display when it unveiled its new flagship G3 smartphone. Samsung isn't about to let LG bask in that glory for too long and is rumored to be readying its own QHD-enabled smartphone. The smartphone has been referred to as the Galaxy F or Galaxy S5 Prime and is believed to be Samsung's response to both the LG G3 and HTC One M8, due to its display and premium aluminum body.
New images of what is reportedly the Galaxy F have leaked, along with some of the smartphone's specifications. PhoneArena received a tip from a reader who is in possession of a pre-production model. The tipster claims that the smartphone is currently using a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, but says the smartphone will receive a bump to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 chipset when it's released. The smartphone is reported to have a 5.3-inch 2560 x 1440 QHD display and one of the images show the handset's splash screen with the name "Samsung Galaxy F" on it.
The tipster also claims that the Galaxy F is slightly smaller than the current Galaxy S5 and includes thinner bezels. It's also described as being "asymmetrical," with the top of the device being more curved than its lower half. Just like the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy F is IP67 certified to be both waterproof and dust resistant. The Samsung Galaxy F will also pack in 3 GB of RAM in addition to its quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor. Its rear camera is reportedly a 16-megapixel shooter with OIS (optical image stabilization).
The same tipster also sent in pictures of the Galaxy F taken outdoors, which gives us a better look at the front of the smartphone and its rear brushed-aluminum case. The front of the handset looks just like the Galaxy S5 and has a physical home button and presumably the same embedded fingerprint scanner. The rear of the device is brushed aluminum and, just like the Galaxy S5, its heart-rate sensor is located directly beneath its 16-megapixel camera.
The report also claims the Samsung Galaxy F will be released in September around the same time as the iPhone 6. If the September date is correct, it will likely see an unveiling at IFA in Berlin alongside the Galaxy Note 4. We'll be sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
