'Star Wars Battlefront' Beta Coming In Oct., Will Feature A Brand New Mode

Star Wars Battlefront is getting a beta this October, and it will include a brand new game mode.

The beta will be coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC via Origin with three game types: Walker Assault, Survival and the previously unannounced Drop Zone. As we've seen in gameplay footage numerous times before, Walker Assault is a 40v40 game mode that will take place on frozen Hoth. Gamers will be able to play as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in this game type, as Rebels fight to stop the approaching AT-ATs and Imperials seek to defend them.

Players can also try the game's horde-mode Survival game type on Tatooine. This mode allows for up to two players to battle it out against ever-larger waves of Imperial forces. We don't yet have details on the new Drop Zone mode that will also be making its debut during the beta, but EA says it will be sharing more details about Drop Zone in the weeks ahead.

In addition to announcing a beta, EA took the opportunity to announce a Star Wars Battlefront companion app as well. The app will be live during the beta and allow for players to track stats, modify loadouts and connect with friends. The app will also be a game in and of itself. Called Base Command, it will be a digital card game in which players can earn credits to unlock additional content in Star Wars Battlefront. The app will be available on November 17 through the Apple App Store and Google Play.

EA didn't give an exact release date for the game's beta or details on how players will get access to it, but the publisher did specify it would be coming in early October. Expect more details, including dates, sign-ups and more about Drop Zone, soon. You can learn more about the game's free Battle of Jakku DLC here. The DLC is a tie-in for the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Players who pre-order the game will get access to the DLC seven days early.
