Heading into Monday Night Raw on August 31, the WWE Universe and Seth Rollins knew that he would be putting his World Heavyweight championship on the line against Sting at the WWE Night of Champions (2015) pay-per-view on September 20.
What they didn't know is that Rollins would also be defending his United States championship in a separate match against John Cena the same night.
Rollins, with Stephanie McMahon beside him, received a rude awakening at the end of Raw, when he called out Sting, but was instead greeted by Cena. Upon entering the ring, Cena grabbed the mic and declared: "Stephanie McMahon is going to be the one right now who makes your life miserable."
Cena held court, explaining to Rollins how and why The Authority is setting him up to fail.
"You're unbelievably talented in this ring, but you're a conceited egomaniac, who quite frankly is the biggest idiot I have ever met in my entire life and I'll tell you why... you think that you're actually friends with The Authority," Cena said.
Cena went on to explain how Rollins is the perfect hand-picked champion for The Authority, considering he stabbed Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose of The Shield in the back. Cena then notified Rollins that he's cashing in on his U.S. title rematch clause, stemming from their SummerSlam match. Cena put McMahon on the spot to tell Rollins so.
"Do I have a match against Captain Morgan at Night of Champions for the United States championship?" Cena asked McMahon with Rollins expecting her to say no.
With hesitation, Stephanie mouthed, "yes," throwing Rollins into a frenzied fit.
So, Night of Champions (2015) has two main events thus far... and Seth Rollins is in both of them. Can he escape the pay-per-view in matches against Sting and John Cena with both the World Heavyweight and U.S. championships intact?
