Want to learn how to do "the Whirl" like a Witcher? Luckily, an actual sword master has made a how-to video that can bring you one step closer to performing the intensive sword move exactly like a playable character in Witcher 3, but in real life. Or, as per the caption of the video: "learn how to whirl like the cool kids at Kaer Morhen."
Created by a 25-year-old "HEMA instructor and sword performer from Poland" and blacksmith named Alan, who has "been fencing since [he] was 12... [including] sport fencing, polish saber, kenjutsu, to finally settle on Renaissance German longsword," the video is filed under the name of his Facebook page for another entrepreneurial pursuit: sword-fighting instruction. (This page also connects to his blacksmithing work: Nordic-inspired armor and weaponry.)
In the video, Alan's instructional blow-by-blow breaks down "the Whirl" into three steps: the "snake" (aka the "short guard"), the "pirouette," and the "reverse pirouette." According to the longsword trainer, a chain of pirouettes – and subsequently reverse pirouettes – can be formed, "however many as you like."
But, as Alan warns via disclaimer on the video post, don't try this at home, kids — or rather, don't try to apply this move to an actual duel: "It's not a combat technique. I mean it. Don't try it the next time you are about to get mugged by armed brigands."
