After a tease that former WWE Superstar Edge will make an appearance in Season 2 of CW's The Flash, it has now been confirmed that he is officially joining the cast as Atom Smasher.
The former wrestler, whose real name is Adam Copeland, confirmed on Twitter on Thursday his new role. Copland will appear in the season premiere as the villainous character set to take down the Flash. The CW describes the role as "one of the most powerful enemies" fans will see in the show's second season.
According to the network's character description via ComicBook.com, "Atom Smasher has come to Central City to kill The Flash. His incredible strength and ability to grow to enormous size makes him more than a match for Flash and the entire S.T.A.R. Labs team will have to come together to find a way to defeat him."
However, this description is quite the opposite of how the character is portrayed in comics.
Atom Smasher first appeared in DC Comics' All-Star Squadron Annual #2 – The Ultra War! in 1983. Known by his real name, Albert Julian Rothstein, Atom Smasher (alias Nuklon) learns that his Uncle Al is actually the Golden Age Atom (and his godfather). He then begins to develop super powers that alter the size and density of his body from his grandfather — the villainous Cyclotron, who was the scientist that gained superpowers after an atomic experiment went wrong.
Albert begins to fight crime by the name of Nuklon as a member of Infinity, Inc., then later joins the Justice League as Atom Smasher. His powers include size manipulation, super strength and increased speed and stamina.
Even though the CW is taking a villainous take on the character, with Copeland's previous role as The Rated R Superstar, we are sure he probably has the whole bad guy mentality worked out.
After retiring from the WWE four years ago, Copeland has picked up small acting parts, such as his recurring role on Syfy's Haven.
Fans can see him in action when Season 2 of The Flash returns on the CW on October 6.
