ReBoot, the CG animated show from the 1990s that ran for four seasons and took place inside a computer world known as the Mainframe, is getting a reboot of its own.
Mainframe Entertainment and Corus Entertainment are resurrecting the long dead children's show as 26 new, half-hour episodes that will reimagine the show's world. The show will be a combination of live-action and CGI animation, separating it from the all-CG original.
Titled ReBoot: The Guardian Code, this reboot of ReBoot is meant to serve as an update for today's generation. After all, technology has changed a ton since the original show debuted back in 1994.
"Reboot: The Guardian Code and associated brand extensions will deliver mass appeal with a technology focus, empowering kids with the tools and confidence to chart their own course in a world that is increasingly dependent on and powered by technological knowledge," reads a press release detailing the new show. Below is the official synopsis:
Transcending age groups with appeal to kids, tweens and teens, ReBoot: the Guardian Code is an adventure-comedy series about four teens (Austin, Parker, Grey and Tamra) who discover that they're next-gen Guardians with a mission to save the world, by defending it in cyberspace. The Internet revolutionized the world, but it also left it vulnerable to attack. With the help of VERA, the last surviving cyberbeing from the original Guardian Program, our heroes stream into cyberspace where they use their awesome code-based powers to battle viruses that have been unleashed by a ruthless hacker. Known only as the Sourcerer, he seeks to rule the world by controlling cyberspace. Original fans of the show will be happy to hear that Megabyte will be back and he's getting a major upgrade. ReBoot will showcase leading edge technologies and bring coding into the mainstream for kids.
If the success of more recent computer-themed properties like Tron are anything to go by, there is definitely a market for a tech-focused children's show. Kids spend more time today on tablets, smartphones and computers than ever before, so imagining a living and breathing world inside those machines seems like the perfect way to capture a kid's imagination.
The original show went off the air in 2001, but that hasn't stopped ReBoot from earning something close to cult-status with its crude CG animation. Though many animated shows today use CG, like Star Wars Rebels, for example, ReBoot truly was a pioneer in the field.
From the sound of it, this reimagined ReBoot won't feature the characters or the storylines from the original show, though the main villain of the original series, the virus known as Megabyte, is set to return. Let's all be thankful technology has improved leaps and bounds over the last 14 years for this new show to become a reality. If kids today tried to watch the original ReBoot series, they might just have nightmares. Not word yet on when the show may premiere.
