Just a few of the many video games have been rebooted over the years (or are about to be), complete reimaginings from the ground up that bring these storied franchises up to date with modern gaming. They also have the distinction of being reboots that shared the same unnumbered, no-subtitle name as their forebears.
Today, EA Games is adding Need for Speed to that list. The franchise's dedicated studio, Sweden's Ghost Games, is behind the new Need for Speed, and EA is stressing that the developer took a year off from its usual release schedule in order to get this right.
"We are making the game we've always wanted to," said executive producer Marcus Nilsson (via IGN). "We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed."
To that end, the Ghost Games claims to have found a renewed, sharpened focus on the things that set Need for Speed apart from the likes of Forza or Gran Turismo is its focus on urban car culture. Need for Speed's races will take place entirely at night, in an open world environment. EA promises "deep customization" and an immersive story campaign. (Imagine The Fast & the Furious as a video game, and that's basically it.) Much of the game's authenticity is being drawn from Speedhunters, the EA-owned car culture blog.
Above you'll find the first teaser trailer for the game; the first full-length trailer will debut on June 15 at E3. Below, enjoy the game's very first screenshots.
Need for Speed is expected sometime this fall for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Watch for plenty more details when E3 takes place in June.
