May is here, and that means another batch of free video games from Microsoft if you are an Xbox Live Gold subscriber.
What free games are up for grabs this month? As detailed in Major Nelson's official Xbox blog, Xbox One owners will be able to download Castlestorm: Definitive Edition anytime in May. PoolNation FX, a carryover from last month, will also be free to download.
On Xbox 360 the choices are a little more exciting. For the first half of the month gamers can snag the open-world gangster simulator Mafia II for free. Come May 16th, Mafia II will swap out with F1 2013 for some high-speed racing action.
To say that May's offerings are a little disappointing after the superb selection in April is an understatement. Not only were more big name titles being offered for free in May (Child of Light, Terarria, Gears of War: Judgement, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel) but the number of free titles doubled for Xbox 360 owners, who received two free games for each half of the month.
However, Microsoft did state that April's double offering of free games was only for that month. Still, it's a little disappointing to go from such a great selection back to this.
Sony has yet to announce the free games that will be coming for PlayStation Plus subscribers in May. We recently compared PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold and found Sony's service to have the upper hand. A cheaper price tag, original content and more (and generally better) free games gives PlayStation Plus an obvious advantage, though Microsoft's Xbox Live has long been the, ahem, "gold" standard for online console gaming. Let's hope Microsoft can step up their game soon.
