Stephen Curry is expected to be named NBA MVP on Monday, May 4, ESPN is reporting.
If the report pans out to be true, it would mean that voters thought Curry leading the Golden State Warriors to a franchise-record 67-win season and averaging 23.8 points, 7.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and two steals per game were enough to give him the league's MVP award.
Winning the MVP would also mean that Curry edged the efforts of players such as Oklahoma City Thunder's Russell Westbrook, Houston Rockets' James Harden, Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James and New Orleans Pelicans' Anthony Davis.
In particular, Westbrook went on a triple-double tear this season, winning the league's scoring title (28.1 points per game) and barely clinching a playoff berth for the Thunder. A strong case could have also been made for Harden to win MVP, as he averaged 27.4 points per game and led the Rockets to the second seed in the Western Conference.
After leading the Warriors to a 101-86 Game 1 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference semifinals Sunday night, Curry spoke to ESPN about the possibility of winning MVP.
"I honestly have no idea. It's obviously just ... in the middle of a playoff series, it's hard to kind of separate yourself with other things that may or may not happen," Curry said. "Obviously I know what the situation is, and just trying to focus on the game. And if I get a call [Monday], I'll definitely be happy, and there will be a lot of people that can be proud of that moment, as well, and we'll enjoy it. But right now I'm happy we won Game 1. I'll wake up tomorrow a fresh new day, and we'll see what happens."
Well-deserved, Chef Curry. Well deserved.
