We're seeing regular clips and teasers as the lead-up to Marvel's Daredevil on Netflix continues to build, but today's teaser is loaded with easter eggs — including one that definitively settles a question fans have been wondering about since the series was announced.
This latest teaser is another "motion poster" featuring dialogue from the show heard over a stylized view of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock walking down a street in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. It's artistic and quite beautiful; see for yourself.
Look closer, and you'll see all sorts of details, such as other characters on the show and their settings. We'll take a look at each one, but first, let's answer that big, burning question.
Does Marvel's Daredevil exist in the same universe as Marvel's big-screen movies? And don't forget about the three other superheroes coming to Netflix in their own series as well — Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist — who will eventually appear in a team-up series called The Defenders. Could characters from The Avengers or even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. conceivably crossover onto one of Netflix's shows? Or could one of the Defenders join up with the Avengers someday on the big screen, as Luke Cage did in the comics?
While we can't speak to Marvel's crossover plans, we can say for sure that Netflix's Marvel shows and characters definitely exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How do we know?
Because of an easy-to-miss detail that's just barely visible in that motion poster teaser above. You'll probably need to play the video at full-screen resolution to see it. Snuggled comfortably among New York City's skyscrapers is a recognizable landmark: Avengers Tower. Here's a closer look, enhanced to make the Tower easier to see. The Daredevil image is on the left; on the right is how the Tower appears in Age of Ultron.
In addition to the Tower, there might be another biggie. Some fans watching Charlie Cox walk toward the camera believe that his reflection on the wet city street offers a glimpse of his final Daredevil costume. So far, Marvel and Netflix have been keeping the Daredevil costume under wraps, saving it for its debut late in the show's first season. Is it in this teaser? Here's a better look at the reflection, enhanced and flipped.
Cranking up the saturation reveals that there's definitely a red hue to the figure in the reflection. Other details are hard to make out, but with a little imagination, you can almost picture Daredevil's "DD" insignia on the chest.
Then again, maybe not.
Right above the diner is the law office of Nelson and Murdock.
Across the street from Nelson and Murdock you can see Claire Temple, aka the Night Nurse (Rosario Dawson). She's standing on a catwalk right outside her clandestine medical office. That red shape in the far left window is the office's red cross sign.
One of the easiest things to see is Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) standing to the right of Matt Murdock. His right-hand man Wesley (Toby Leonard Moore) is next to him.
Finally, we have one last pair of individuals that's a little harder to make out. But our best guess is that the male figure is Leland Owlsley (Bob Gunton), aka mob boss the Owl. The woman standing next to him is probably Vanessa Marianna (spoiler alert: Vanessa is the future Mrs. Wilson Fisk), as played by actress Ayelet Zurer.
Marvel's Daredevil debuts on April 10, 2015. In typical Netflix fashion, you'll be able to stream the entire first season from day one.
