It's no surprise that The Walking Dead's spin-off was ordered for a full season before the entire cast was revealed. AMC's post-apocalyptic drama is one of the biggest shows in entertainment today; anything even remotely attached to it will inevitably do well.
That being said, it's a little strange to see that a TV series without a name has been picked up for a second season. That's right: The Walking Dead's companion series doesn't have a title or a cast, but it's already been renewed.
Deadline has confirmed that AMC has picked up the second season of The Walking Dead's companion series, which will likely air in 2016. The first season, which consists of just six episodes, will air sometime later this year.
It seems strange at first, but it makes more sense when looking at AMC's strategy with another spin-off, Better Call Saul. The Breaking Bad spin-off was also ordered for two full seasons before it aired, and it looks as if the network will do the same thing for The Walking Dead's companion series.
It may sound like AMC is rushing things, but given how well Better Call Saul is doing, it seems like AMC is simply doubling down on its successes. However, things are a bit different for The Walking Dead and its spin-off - Better Call Saul didn't debut until after Breaking Bad went off the air, while The Walking Dead and the companion series will seemingly air back-to-back. Whether or not this leads to viewer fatigue is still unknown, but it's a definite possibility.
Either way, AMC is moving full steam ahead with The Walking Dead - hopefully, fans won't get tired of too many zombies before the spin-off even airs.
The Walking Dead companion series is set to debut sometime later this year.
