An incredible stream of photos shows a weasel taking a ride on the back of a woodpecker. The images were tweeted out by Jason Ward, but the pictures were taken by photographer Martin Le-May.
From the picture, the bird was clearly not happy about having the weasel on its back. How did the animal get there in the first place? Sightings such as these are unheard of.
Weasels are notorious for nest robbing, so it would appear the woodpecker attacked the weasel while at the bird's nest, and the battle began. The weasel found itself on top of the woodpecker with the intention to have it for dinner, but the bird's maneuvers helped it stay alive while the weasel had to go away on a hungry belly.
According to Le-May, he was walking through the Hornchurch Country Park in East London along with his wife when he spotted the awesome event happening before his very eyes.
"The bird flew across us and slightly in our direction; suddenly it was obvious it had a small mammal on its back and this was a struggle for life," Le-May told The Business Insider via email.
Luckily, he was out with his camera, so he quickly took a few pictures -- and they are completely mind-boggling. Never before have we ever witnessed something like this in the animal kingdom. And we may never again for the rest of our lives.
