Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, directors of John Wick, have announced they are working on John Wick 2. This is not surprising since the movie starring Keanu Reeves was a surprise hit at the box office back in 2014.
John Wick is one of those films no one thought would amount to anything positive, then BAM! it slaps you in the face. The film never once took the top spot at the box office but was successful enough to warrant a second run.
According to the directors, in an interview with Movies.com, they have big plans for the action aspect of the second film. They are confident that surpassing the quality where action is concerned with John Wick 2 is very much possible, but the problem lies in the story and making the character likable again.
"We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It's the matter of story and how much you like the character," said Stahelski. "So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we'll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome."
Now, because the film is in the early stages, it is not yet clear if Keanu Reeves will return for a second run. We see no reason why he wouldn't because he needs more hit films, and this one has some much potential to turn out well.
Stahelski also made it clear that he wants Reeves to return, so a little bit of negotiation should be enough to get him up and running again for another shot at being John Wick.
We can only hope the directors realize what was awesome with the first film and not attempt to veer away from the magic with the second. Stick the basic story elements and keep away from making it too deep. As along as the action is solid, John Wick 2 should be a blast.
The first film is currently available on Blu-Ray.
