Apple might be taking a surprising turn as rumors about a low-cost MacBook series resurface, potentially challenging Google's popular Chromebook dominance.
As stated by prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the batch of more affordable MacBooks might arrive in 2024.
Reigniting the Rumors About Cheaper MacBooks
In September, DigiTimes hinted at Apple's plans to introduce a more affordable MacBook lineup in late 2024, positioning it alongside the existing MacBook Air and Pro models.
Now, Kuo echoes this idea, suggesting that Apple might indeed be considering this strategy to reinvigorate MacBook sales, aiming for a substantial 8-10+ million units sold annually.
Kuo's prediction dovetails with Apple's recent announcement of an event, ominously dubbed "Scary Fast," scheduled for October 30. The analyst hints at a focus on multiple M3 chips, fueling speculations about the potential launch of M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chip variants.
If the Cupertino giant does unveil this trio, they could likely find their home in new MacBook Pro models, spanning 13-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch iterations.

Apple Struggles With Limited MacBook Shipments
Kuo had earlier indicated that Apple was unlikely to introduce new MacBook Pro models in 2023 due to limited shipments in the fourth quarter. He now anticipates that if new MacBook Pros do emerge in November or December, constrained supplies may persist until the first quarter of 2024.
The primary reason behind the decline in Mac shipments, according to Kuo, has been the "limited M2 computing power upgrade."
To counter this, the iPhone maker might be gearing up to release M3 MacBook Pro models, with the potential to deliver a more significant boost in computing power. If the M3 fails to drive increased sales, this could pave the way for Apple's introduction of a "more affordable MacBook model," per MacRumors.
Is the 12-inch MacBook Returning?
Reports from Taiwan hint that Apple's more affordable MacBooks might incorporate design alterations to facilitate cost-effectiveness. While the outer appearance is expected to retain the iconic metal casing, Apple might explore "different materials" to meet lower price points.
The reintroduction of a low-cost Mac could manifest as a new 12-inch MacBook. First introduced in 2015, the original 12-inch MacBook was celebrated for its sleek design, featherweight build, and pioneering features like fanless design, USB-C ports, and butterfly switch keyboard. However, it faced criticism due to underpowered Intel Core M processors, which deterred potential buyers.
Talk of the 12-inch MacBook's return began when Apple transitioned to custom Apple silicon processors. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman ignited the rumors, suggesting a potential launch by the end of 2023 or in 2024.
Earlier this year, Gurman altered his stance, asserting that a 12-inch MacBook wasn't in Apple's immediate plans, leaving room for a potential revival in 2024 or later.
The following month, new rumors pointed out that Apple was planning to reintegrate the 12-inch MacBook into its lineup. Manufacturing activities linked to the device were reportedly underway, with a decision on mass production pending later this year.
The correlation between these reports and the low-cost MacBook concept remains uncertain, but Apple's potential pivot towards affordable computing has certainly sparked intrigue.
