Apple revealed its lineup of the latest iPhone 15 versions as well as other product upgrades during the event.

Reports tell us that Apple CEO Tim Cook made an unexpected visit to China, where he cheered on gamers during an "Honor of Kings" tournament at an Apple store in Chengdu.

This visit comes at a crucial time for Apple, as the recently launched iPhone 15 faces a lukewarm reception in China.

Apple CEO Tim Cook's Surprise Stop in China

During the tournament, gamers gathered to play "Honor of Kings," a mobile game developed by TiMi Studio, a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Tencent.

Cook, in a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, expressed his enthusiasm for the game's origins in Chengdu and its global success.

"The action-packed Honor of Kings started here in Chengdu and is now a global phenomenon on the App Store," he said. This game has been a significant revenue driver for Apple's App Store in China.

iPhone 15 Sales Decline in China

Cook's visit to China coincides with reports of iPhone 15 sales struggling in the country. According to Counterpoint Research (via CNBC), sales of the iPhone 15 series during the first 17 days are down by 4.5% compared to the previous iPhone 14.

This decline follows the entry of Chinese tech giant Huawei into the high-end smartphone market with the launch of a new smartphone containing a high-end semiconductor and 5G connectivity despite US sanctions.

CNBC also reported that Jefferies analysts further emphasized Huawei's resurgence, suggesting that Huawei has now overtaken Apple as the No. 1 smartphone maker in China.

These challenges, including poor consumer sentiment, iPhone 15's performance compared to its predecessor, and increasing competition, have contributed to a challenging start for Apple's flagship smartphone in China.

China's Economic Factors Impacting iPhone Sales

The decline in iPhone 15 sales is attributed to broader economic factors affecting China.

Counterpoint Research's Mengmeng Zhang (via Fortune) points to a decline in consumer spending driven by economic challenges, including real estate and youth unemployment crises.

These factors have led Chinese consumers to scale back their spending, impacting the demand for high-end smartphones.

Apple's Significance in the Chinese Market

Apple faces a tough landscape in China despite its significant presence in the country. The iPhone remains Apple's largest revenue generator, accounting for 52% of its sales last year.

In 2022, almost 20% of Apple's revenue came from the Chinese market, and Chinese factories produced approximately 85% of Apple's iPhones.

Apple's Regulatory Challenges in China

While Apple maintains a strong presence in China, the company faces regulatory challenges. New rules from Beijing have complicated Apple's relationship with China.

Reports suggest that staff at several government agencies have been instructed not to bring iPhones to work due to unspecified security concerns.

Additionally, new censorship rules now require all programs sold on Chinese app stores to be licensed by the Chinese government.

As a result, Apple must ask new apps to provide proof of Chinese government approval, and existing apps may be forced to leave the Chinese store as the grace period ends in March.
