Snapchat is reportedly gearing up to venture further into the world of generative AI technologies, following the earlier introduction of its chatbot "My AI," which now boasts the ability to respond with images and not just text.
According to TechCrunch, a new upcoming feature called "Dreams" signals Snapchat's intent to explore AI-generated visuals again, potentially incorporating users and their friends into imaginative backdrops.
Snapchat 'Dreams'
According to insights from app researcher and developer Steve Moser, Snapchat has been actively developing features that permit users to capture or upload selfies, which the app can then transform into new images depicting the users in envisioned scenarios.
This concept bears a resemblance to existing AI photo applications available on the App Store. Snapchat envisions "Dreams" as a tool that harnesses AI-generated selfies to position individuals in "fantastical places and scenarios," as indicated by Moser's research findings.
Like other AI-driven selfie apps, Snapchat's functionality would necessitate clear and unobstructed selfies for optimal results. The app will guide users in capturing selfies from various angles, expressions, and lighting conditions to enhance the AI-generated images.
Besides the personal AI "Dreams," Snapchat is also in the process of crafting "Dreams with Friends," a feature that allows users to authorize their friends to co-create AI-generated "dream" images featuring both individuals, according to Moser.
Including references to purchasing "Dream Packs" within Snapchat's app hints about its potential to evolve into a monetizable offering down the line.
Initial glimpses of "Dreams" emerged in the spring when reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi unveiled the feature, showcasing its capability to integrate users' likenesses into AI-driven realms.
Positioned prominently between the Camera Roll and Stories sections of Snapchat's app, the feature's visibility suggests the company's commitment to moving forward with the concept. However, it must be noted that Snapchat has chosen not to provide commentary on its roadmap for "Dreams."

In April, the app made waves by announcing the expansion of the "My AI" feature to a global user base, eliminating the requirement for a paid subscription to access the chatbot.
The company's decision aims to make this feature freely available to all, focusing on ChatGPT's capabilities as they integrate into the app.
"My AI" introduced personalized responses to users' messages, simulating interactions reminiscent of conversations with friends. These interactions encompassed recommendations for travel destinations, Lens suggestions, and pertinent replies to text-based chats.
Built upon OpenAI's GPT technology, the chatbot was designed to furnish instantaneous responses akin to human-like conversations.
