A new research claims to develop a new AI to help look and find history-old archaeological sites in the world. It will help the experts and academe to look for previously overlooked locations. The AI will center on using satellite imagery to analyze its search, and it will then help deduce the supposed site in the Mesopotamian Floodplain.
Human researchers in the past missed many artifacts and locations, and in reality, despite the many discoveries known to the public, there is still a lot to find in the world that explains the past.
AI to Search for Archaeological Sites in Mesopotamian Floodplain
Researchers from the University of Bologna released a new study regarding their application of AI in helping detect more archaeological sites that remain undiscovered. The team published their study on arXiv, claiming that it will be a human-AI collaboration to search for unknown locations with a lot to offer the world.
The team sets its sights on the Mesopotamian Floodplain, filled with rich histories of the past, particularly those that remain unknown to experts and the public alike.
"The dataset, while may be considered a very large one for near eastern archaeology with its almost 5,000 sites, is hardly sufficient for training a model as large as the state-of-the-art ones we see in use today and, perhaps more significantly, contains many cases that are visible only on certain old imagery," claimed the researchers.

Satellite Imagery to be Probed by AI for its Search
One of the most important data it will use would be satellite imagery to help give them a wider view of the world, especially in the region it aims to study.
According to Interesting Engineering, the study claims to include both high-speed detections, the mistakes it could introduce, and combining all of the data to give humans a better scope of the areas to look into.
AI and its Application in Many Industries
Artificial intelligence was mostly thought of to apply to those in the tech industry, especially in the many developments it brought to the modern devices and gadgets known to the public. Multiple developments and applications in the tech world already see AI integration, including Spotify and its music recommendations, ChatGPT from OpenAI, and more.
The technology is also famous for helping the medical industry in its quest for the next big drug to help hard-to-cure illnesses and assisting medical professionals in properly detecting what is wrong with the patient.
Designers also use AI to design future cities, imagining what they will look like in the coming years of civilization.
There are many applications where AI is massive and helps a lot in their processes to maximize deep learning skills and resources to further improve work. Now, it is applied to archaeology, especially in determining sites that went unnoticed or unpreserved in the past, with a chance to commemorate and protect these for the future.
