Twitter ‘GodMode’: Whistleblower Reveals this Allows Engineers to Tweet as Anyone, But is it Legit?

There is an alleged GodMode on Twitter where engineers could be anyone.

There is a new Twitter controversy that popped up from a whistleblower, who happens to be a former employee of the company. The ex-Twitter personnel claimed that there is still access to "GodMode" in the social media platform, one that allows Twitter engineers to access and tweet using any account, now called the "privileged mode."

'GodMode' was a previous issue against Twitter before Elon Musk stepped in, but the new claims said that it is still activatable on the platform three months after the takeover.

According to a report by The Washington Post, an ex-Twitter employee, who was not named, claimed that the company still allows the 'GodMode' feature to take over any account. There was a previous complaint filed in October by the Whistleblower Aid, a non-profit organization with the FTC, which is still investigating this allegation.

The former Twitter staff claimed that GodMode is now known as "privileged mode," and that it is still accessible from the company's system.

They also demonstrated how it works and shared screenshots of the code, showing that it only needs a computer and changing the code simply from "FALSE" to "TRUE."

Whistleblower: GodMode Allows Tweets from Any Account

As per the whistleblower, Twitter engineers and people familiar with this vulnerability can tweet from any account to their liking, and would not be traced back to them.

According to Engadget, there was previous scrutiny on Twitter back in 2020 when crypto scammers who were teenagers, hacked the company's internal systems to send tweets from prolific accounts. It included politicians like Barack Obama, President Joe Biden, tech CEO Elon Musk, and more.

Twitter's Security Issues

Twitter has had a fair share of whistleblowers leaking information from the company which talked about its vulnerabilities and security issues present on the platform. One iconic revelation was from an ex-Twitter head of security, Peiter "Mudge" Zatko, who claimed in an exclusive interview that the social media has significant problems that may threaten national democracy and security.

There was also a recent event earlier this January and December 2022 regarding hackers stealing valuable information from the company's systems. The latest one from earlier this month claimed that millions of emails were leaked online, and this is the time when the Musk-owned platform is undergoing changes.

With the many security issues and vulnerabilities on Twitter, the return of the infamous GodMode controversy sheds a massive light on how it takes on the company's privacy and access. Despite the report three months ago, this so-called privileged mode is still accessible and remains a massive concern as anyone can be used to tweet any information on the platform.
