After Musk took control, the social media network left the said headquarters.

Twitter is facing a lawsuit due to unpaid rent - again.

Legal action had been filed against Elon Musk's social media firm on Monday, Jan. 23, for allegedly failing to pay rent for its London headquarters, a representative for the Crown Estate told CNN.

Crown Estate is a portfolio of commercial properties in Britain that has traditionally belonged to the monarchy.

New Filed Lawsuit

Last Monday, Jan. 23, the estate that handles King Charles III's property sued Twitter in the highest court in the nation's capital.

The BBC reported that the alleged overdue rent payments pertain to an office building located near Piccadilly Circus in the heart of London.

A statement from Twitter was requested but has yet to be provided.

According to The Guardian's report, the royal estate said the court action was connected to "rental arrears" on the social networking platform's office space in the British city.

The royal estate apparently filed suit against the social networking firm after contacting them about the alleged rental arrears at their office space, as reported by the BBC.

The estate, whose property portfolio is worth £15.6 billion ($19.2 billion) and includes 241 properties in central London, is not the monarch's personal property despite being one of the biggest landowners in the UK.

The estate's profits are given to the government via the sovereign grant, while the Treasury uses the money for public purposes.

Similar Legal Action

This is not the first time Twitter has been sued for not paying rent.

California Property Trust sued Twitter for not paying its San Francisco office rent, which TechTimes reported earlier this month. Reports indicate that the Hartford Building's 30th-story rents for $136,250. This is at 650 California Street in San Francisco.

Twitter was informed on December 16, 2022 that the whole area would be leased if it did not pay the amount in five days. Twitter failed to comply, prompting the San Francisco state court action.

Its worldwide headquarters are in San Francisco, but the company has been late on rent payments for weeks at other locations. Case number CGC-22-603719 is being heard in the Superior Court of the State of California by Columbia Reit - 650 California LLC vs. Twitter Inc.

Twitter's New CEO

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has been running Twitter since last October.

Musk forked out $44 billion for the platform and slashed the company's headcount of 7,000 by half.

There have been problems since Musk took control. This includes the disorganized relaunch of the blue tick system for verified users, which caused many impostors' accounts to pop up and caused several advertisers to pull support for the site out of fear of an increase in hate speech.

Reportedly, the company has seen a 40% decline in sales as a result of more than 500 customers ceasing expenditure. These major companies comprise Audi and Pfizer, among others, who have suspended advertising.
