Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra selfie camera might surprisingly come with a massive downgrade, a recent report says.
While the next-generation Samsung flagship is expected to draw buyers with an impressive upgrade, it turns out that it comes with a single downgrade.
It might be disappointing for some selfie lovers out there. However, some folks would likely welcome this move.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Selfie Camera Might Disappoint
As per the latest report by GSM Arena, the selfie camera of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is likely getting a downgrade contrary to previous leaks.
It is pretty surprising for a next-generation mobile device to get a downgrade from its predecessors. However, it looks like the South Korean phone maker is doing just that.
GSM Arena notes that a report from the Galaxy Club is now claiming that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is likely sporting a lower-resolution front-facing snapper.
It is worth noting that previous leaks predict otherwise, suggesting an upgrade. However, it now seems that the most expensive Ultra variant is actually getting a downgrade.
According to a news story by GizChina, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra already rocks an impressive 40-megapixel (MP) front shooter. It was a noteworthy upgrade from its predecessor, the Galaxy S10 Plus, which only featured a 10 MP selfie camera.
Given that, some folks might be expecting that the upcoming Samsung flagship will follow the same route of making a significant leap in terms of megapixels.
However, it is worth mentioning that it has been a while since the selfie camera had a similar upgrade. In fact, GizChina notes that the S21 Ultra and the S22 Ultra both sported a 40 MP front-facing snapper. As such, some might be predicting that the S23 Ultra would keep the same sensor.
But instead, the recent report says that the upcoming phone only comes with 12 MP.
Is it Really a Downgrade?
To be fair, this might help hide some of the imperfections when taking selfies sans the filter.
Hardware specs-wise, it sure is a downgrade when pixel count is concerned. But it might be useful for hiding some blemishes while taking selfies.
On top of that, GSM Arena notes that the pixel count is only one part of the picture. It does not necessarily dictate the overall quality of the image. So, even with the megapixel downgrade, we might still see better performance for the upcoming S23 Ultra.
If ever Samsung decides to pull off the megapixel downgrade, its next flagship will roughly have the same MP capacity as the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max.
