Apple AirPods and Mac accessories are supporting USB-C by 2024, ditching the Lightning cable.
It looks like Apple is looking to adopt the more widely used USB-C among its devices in the next two years, a recent report discloses.
Apple AirPods, Mac Accessories to Start Support USB-C Cables in 2024
As per the latest report by Engadget, the Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman revealed in its latest Power On newsletter that Apple plans to implement an update to its AirPods and Mac accessories moving forward.
Gurman claims that Apple is looking to adopt USB-C support for its next-generation AirPods in 2024. Not to mention that the accessories of Macs, such as the sleek-looking Magic Mouse, are also set to ditch the Lightning cable in favor of the more widely-used option.
The Bloomberg journalist notes that the upcoming wireless earbuds of the iPhone maker, including the AirPods and AirPods Pro, might start offering USB-C support as early as 2024.
On the other hand, Gurman believes Mac accessories, specifically the Magic Trackpad and Magic Keyboard, would start adopting the new charging standard much earlier. These accessories might start supporting USB-C by next year or in 2023.
Meanwhile, Magic Mouse users might have to wait two more years before it ditches the Lightning cable.
The journalist further notes in his Bloomberg newsletter that Apple plans to release a USB-C AirPods even before the European Union officially mandates USB-C as the standard charging option for various devices.
So if the latest report is to be taken at face value, Apple fanboys could get rid of their Lightning cables once they purchase the new product offerings of the Cupertino giant by 2024.
EU USB-C Mandate Pushes Apple to Let Go of Lightning Cable
According to a news story by The Verge, the rumored plan of Apple to adopt USB-C charging comes as the European Parliament has approved the proposal that seeks to mandate a standard charging option.
It should mandate smartphones, tablets, and headphones to start adopting USB-C ports.
USB-C iPhones
Gurman predicts as early as May that Apple is already working on an iPhone that already supports USB-C charging. During that time, the EU is already looking to adopt a standard charging option.
The Bloomberg journalist claims that Apple is gearing up to release the upcoming iPhone 15 series with a USB-C port instead of the Lightning. He went on to note that the next-generation flagship phone "is essentially a lock" to support the proposed charging standard, Engadget highlights in its report.
