The Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro technical specifications no longer include the device's physical nano SIM card slot, with no openings for the tray on its sides. It implies that the new iPhone will no longer require physical SIM cards to be inserted into it, instead relying on its eSIM technology, which was unveiled earlier in September at the Apple Far Out Event.
It appears that the current iPad models will be among the first to receive a similar new Apple feature overhaul. According to MacRumors, Apple SIM is no longer available for activating fresh cellular data plans on supported iPad models as of October 1. This is confirmed by a recent Apple support document.
About the Apple SIM
Based on the previous report, an Apple SIM is a proprietary subscriber identity module (SIM) produced by Apple Inc. in 2014. It is included in the GPS + Cellular versions of the iPad Air 2 and later, the iPad mini 3 and later, and the iPad Pro.
Furthermore, the Apple SIM supports wireless services from multiple carriers, which can be selected from a user interface within iOS and iPadOS, eliminating the need to install a SIM provided by the carrier.
While Apple did not mention the feature when introducing the iPad models that come with Apple SIM, The Verge reports that promotional materials on the company's website mention the feature as being geared toward users of short-term mobile Internet contracts across multiple carriers.
AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile US, EE, au, GigSky, Truphone, Three, and AlwaysOnline Wireless are among the carriers supported by Apple SIM. These carriers cover more than 100 countries, according to Apple. Activating mobile services on AT&T, on the other hand, permanently locks the Apple SIM to AT&T, necessitating the purchase of a new Apple SIM in order to use a different carrier.
New Updates on iPads Apple SIM
As per Apple Support, starting in October, Apple SIM software will no longer be available for activating new cellular data plans on the iPad. Apple informed users to consult their respective carriers for instructions on activating a cellular data plan on the iPad.
Furthermore, if users are uncertain whether their device uses Apple SIM, they should look for the tech specs link for their device.
As said by Apple Insider, the following cellular iPad models are affected:
- The iPad Air 2
- iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 4
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (first and second generation)
- iPad Pro 10.5-inch
- iPad Pro 9.7-inch
- iPad 5 and iPad 6
In other news, on Sunday, October 2, Coinbase users were unable to conduct transactions with US bank accounts for roughly six hours. According to an Engadget report, a problem with the Automated Clearing House Network, which is used for electronic transfers between bank accounts in the nation, started just before 7 AM Eastern Time.
