Google is taking the next step in computer glasses as it recently began testing camera-equipped Augmented Reality (AR) glasses in public, as reported by The Verge.
Based on Google's blog post, it won't be the Glassholes all over again. Instead, it is working on a few dozen testers and the cameras and microphones on its glasses won't support photography and videography.
What Google is testing will gather visual data, which means you won't be able to record someone while wearing it. What it will do is it can translate things in front of you. They also have listed FAQs.
The glasses may also feature LED that will light up if it decides to save images for analysis and will be deleted after 30 days. The images will be stored on a secure server with limited access by a small number of Googles for debugging and analysis.
For now, the testers won't be using them in hospitals, churches, schools, playgrounds, etc. The tech giant hasn't revealed where in the US the glasses will be tested.
The glasses will also be similar to how Google Lens can recognize objects and text with phone cameras.
When it comes to its physical aesthetic, the glasses look almost normal. It is focused on assistive and utility users.
The Rise of Smart Glasses
Testing for smart glasses continues to grow. For one, Meta has started testing pretty depth-sensing camera arrays for Project Aria two years ago. It is focused on how smart sensor-filled glasses can be used responsibly in public places.
On the other hand, Google already has its large-scale smart glasses test almost ten years ago when it launched Google Glass. The Google Glass faced controversy regarding the public use of the camera.
But with this new project, it looks to be a smaller one and on a more focused scale right now. Google also hasn't announced plans for the glasses to be available to the market.
Technology is always changing. And with that comes more tools for people to use to make their lives better and easier. Smart glasses may be the next big thing.
The benefits of lenses are endless. It is obvious why it will be a main weapon in AR. Glasses are a natural companion for AR because they are already used for magnification and text reading. With AR, it becomes a whole new world.
Imagine living in a world where you can interact with things without having to pick up your phone. It will be a revolution.
The future of smart glasses will be a lot better than the first generation of Google Glass. It will be like any other normal lens glasses you see on the street. It will be friendly and seamless. The future of AR is bright.
