Sony CEO Hints at Metaverse Plans | Aiming For Cross-Platform Space?

Metaverse has been one of the most trending topics in technology. Many tech firms are slowly getting into it after Meta (formerly) entered the virtual world earlier this year.

Sony is the latest company that's reportedly interested in exploring the digital space. According to the CEO's recent keynote, the PS5 maker is now ready to present new products across different platforms.

Per News18's report on Thursday, May 19, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida teased that the company is currently exploring its plans to enter the metaverse trend.

The Japanese boss discussed it during their strategy meeting. It appears that Yoshida is now preparing to lead the company in this new venture.

In his keynote address, Yoshida highlighted the importance of their brands in the gaming sector, particularly in the part of free-to-play games.

As such, Sony Music, Sony Motion Pictures, and PlayStation have an important assignment to the entertainment industry.

At the time, the CEO said that he wanted to establish a network for people who wanted to share their interest in games, movies, anime, and music.

For Yoshida, the definition of the metaverse is a space where people establish a connection with one another to "share time and space."

Additionally, the Sony CEO has revealed that the console maker will now be focused on the PlayStation brand. 10 live service games are currently in development.

He expects that the developers will contribute to the company's improvement in seeking greener grounds around the metaverse.

Just recently, the PlayStation Plus plans have been rolled out to the global users, News18 writes in the same report. These will be implemented starting June 22.

Sony eyes to merge it with PlayStation Now. This means that people who are previously relying on this service will be guaranteed to have PlayStation Plus Premium. They won't be required to pay any extra charge during its official release worldwide.

Other Companies Exploring Metaverse

Aside from Sony, other companies have reportedly leaped to the metaverse business. For instance, Microsoft announced last year that it would form a team that would compete with Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, per Tech Times.

Earlier this year, Disney unveiled its patent, signaling its interest in entering the metaverse. It is expected that the entertainment giant will release technologies that will promote some sort of AR or VR experience to the users.

Sony Focusing on EV Industry

Metaverse is not the only venture that Sony wants to test as of writing. According to Nikkei Asia, the PlayStation 5 creator is excited to dive into the EV industry following its partnership with known car manufacturer Honda.

If this goes smoothly according to plan, we could see the Sony brand one day on the roads we traverse.
