Recently, reports have risen about users selling empty PlayStation 5 Boxes for a significant sum of money. As Video Games Chronicle reports, Auction Site Ebay has been targeting these users who have completed listings for over $1,000. However, the auctionite claims the transaction was not completed.
Due to the enormous demand of these next-gen consoles a new demand has been created in the same niche. People are now selling empty boxes for auction, either in an intentional attempt to sell bogus PS5 Consoles or to cater to the market who looks for empty PS5 boxes to prank their kids/friends.The latter is growing due to the rise of prank videos going viral on social media and video platforms like Tiktok and Youtube, which can also be monetized. Due to this growing trend, the demand for empty boxes of PS5 has grown all over the marketplace.
eBay Claims No Empty Ps5 Boxes were Sold
Ebay claims to stay true to their No Items Listing Policy. Currently, they are actively working on targeting sellers that sell empty PS5 boxes. According to Ebay, sellers are also prohibited to "misrepresent what they're listing for sale" on the auction ecommerce site. Whether Playstation 5 boxes are sold for entertainment purposes, or for scamming buyers, listing them online is prohibited due to their policies.
However, despite their action to target these sellers, listings have been completed at $1,000. But Ebay denies through their statement with Snopes that these listings were paid. Moreover, one item's top bidder discloses that they were scammed in the feedback section.
"We have been taking action to remove fraudulent listings from our marketplace...For any purchase, but especially highly-priced or in-demand items, we recommend that buyers exercise caution and thoroughly read the listing description.", eBay said in a statement.

eBay offers Money Back Guarantee to Scammed Buyers
Moreover, buyers who got "scammed" and received an item that is not the same as the product described in the eBay Marketplace is entitled to a refund through eBay's Money Back Guarantee policy.
"eBay is committed to providing a safe, secure online shopping experience to millions of people globally; our protections include state-of-the-art detection tools to monitor listings on the site and robust systems to screen and verify new members," eBay said in line with the guarantee.
This is not the first instance of bogus gimmicks around the in-demand next-gen consoles. Since its release last year, bots and scalpers have already taken over the market, leaving products at an extremely high price. With the second shipment of PS5 consoles, it is expected that Sony and even retailers like eBay could have more stringent measures on assuring that products are free from unethical gimmicks.
