Gamer Discovers 'Shadow Of The Tomb Raider' Alternate Ending That Was Replaced By Day One Patch

A gamer discovered an alternate ending for Shadow of the Tomb Raider that was replaced by a day one patch, although, at first, other people refused to believe it.

The Shadow of the Tomb Raider release date was on Sept. 14, and some hardcore fans of the franchise immediately worked to finish the latest game in the series. Who would have thought that there is a hidden alternate ending?

'Shadow Of The Tomb Raider' Alternate Ending: Spoilers Ahead

There will obviously be spoilers ahead to discuss the Shadow of the Tomb Raider ending, so gamers who would like to finish the game first should look away.

The discovery of the alternate ending for Shadow of the Tomb Raider started on the official Tomb Raider Forums when a user, who goes by the name Tombstone, asked why people were not talking about the letter that Lara Croft received from Jacqueline Natla, the antagonist of the original Tomb Raider of 1996, at the end of the game.

Other users of the forums shot down Tombstone's question. There was no letter from Natla in the ending of the game, which had a post-credits scene of Lara Croft in her late father's estate. The camera then focused on a child's drawing that showed the young Croft with her late parents next to a pyramid and Tyrannosaurus Rex, which are key elements in the original Tomb Raider.

However, Tombstone insisted that there was such a letter. To prove the authenticity of the claim, the gamer replayed Shadow of the Tomb Raider to be able to record the alternate post-credits scene. The video was uploaded to Vimeo, with another user then also posting it on YouTube.

The alternate ending showed Lara Croft in her late father's office, with the scene passing through an envelope sent by Jacqueline Natla addressed to Lara Croft.

Square Enix, afterward, stepped in to explain that there were several post-credits scenes created, with the one featuring a letter from Natla mistakenly included in the final release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The day one patch fixed the error, but Tombstone played through the game without installing that patch first, which is why the alternate post-credits scene was discovered.

What's Next For 'Tomb Raider'

It remains unclear what Square Enix was referring to when it said that it made a mistake. Did it make an error in creating a scene with Natla's name, when there are no plans to bring her back to the franchise? Was it a mistake to use that scene and spoil the direction of the series, with the possibility of a reimagining of the World Video Game Hall of Fame inductee?

In the meantime, fans of the Tomb Raider franchise will have to keep playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Perhaps there are even more easter eggs that are waiting to be discovered in the game.
