Nintendo Switch Third-Party Docks Are Bricking The Hybrid Console, Owners Report

After a series of problems post-launch, everything looks great for Nintendo Switch. However, third-party docks reportedly brick the console after the firmware 5.0 update.

A large number of users noted that the newly released version of the game system's firmware might be the source of the problem. Yet, it seems the error could be caused by the hardware manufactured by companies other than Nintendo.

Nintendo has reportedly agreed to fix consoles affected by aforementioned issue as long as it is still within the warranty period.

Varying Reports Same Result

Some of the affected users confirmed that they used a Nyko Portable Switch Docking Kit. One particular gamer claimed that the save files on the game system were unexplainably deleted.

Moreover, the continued use of the third-party accessory eventually caused the console to stop working altogether.

According to reports, Nintendo informed its users that save files affected by the issue cannot be recovered. Another product that appears to be affected includes the docks from FastSnail while those with Insignia-branded models are supposedly ok.

Manufacturers Voice Out

For now, it is unknown if the third-party docks or the firmware version 5.0 is the cause of the problems that bricked several Switch units. Kotaku, a video game website, contacted Nyko about the affected systems.

The manufacturer recognizes the issues as potentially caused by its hardware. Yet, it apparently needs to perform more tests to narrow down the source of the problem.

"We believe it is related to the way the Switch handles AV output for an external TV/monitor while the console is docked on the Portable Docking Kit," explained a representative from Nyko.

Meanwhile, the Japanese game company acknowledges that it is a legitimate issue and offered repairs for units still covered by its warranty. Additionally, the firm released an official statement regarding third-party peripherals, which cautions users against third-party products.

"Unlicensed products and accessories do not undergo Nintendo's testing and evaluation process. They might not work at all with our game systems, and they could have compatibility problems with certain games, the Nintendo Switch system itself, and other licensed accessories and peripherals," it said.

Value And Function

Nyko points out that its product worked flawlessly prior to the firmware version 5.0 update. On the other hand, Nintendo hurriedly released a new operating system update labeled as version 5.0.1, offering "system stability improvements." It has yet to be confirmed if the new software can fix the bricking issue.

Third-party accessories usually offer features that are not available on original products. For example, some of the docks offered by other manufacturers allow players to simultaneously charge and play their Switch game systems in tabletop mode.

Oftentimes, these products are priced cheaper than the official accessories.
