'Far Cry' Poster Confirms A Modern-Day Setting And Introduces New Characters

Recently, Ubisoft released a trailer for the upcoming Far Cry 5 that showed that the game would take place in a place called Hope County in Montana, but beyond that, not much was revealed about the game.

The trailer, which showed nothing in the way of gameplay, was vague enough to spark a lot of speculation regarding the direction of the series. Some thought it would be an Old West-style game, but a user on Reddit who claimed to have played it at a focus group claimed otherwise. According to the redditor, the game would take place in the modern day and task the player with overcoming a religious cult.

Setting And Theme

At the time of the trailer's release, those rumors were unconfirmed. Ubisoft has now released an image of the game's cover confirming a few things about the game. For starters, the weapons make it clear that this game takes place in a modern setting as we see assault rifles sitting by the table.

The game's religious themes were also confirmed as the game's cover takes clear inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. The game's trailer showed off a mostly uninhabited wilderness, with a single church marking the only signs of human civilization.

Judging from the church on the poster, it's safe to assume that the church is likely affiliated with the aforementioned religious cult.

While we don't know anything about the new characters shown on the cover, we can reasonably speculate that the one sitting in Judas' position will betray the group. It's possible they could be an ally to the player or even the player themselves.

In fact, we know next to nothing about the player character or their role in the game. They may simply be a bystander who stumbles onto some doomsday cult or a member who goes rogue. It will be interesting to see how the game handles the topic of religious extremism, as religion is always a touchy subject for some people and the use of the Last Supper imagery may offend some.

Gameplay

While the trailer gave us no information regarding gameplay, the Far Cry franchise has always focused on gunplay and open-world exploration. It's unlikely that Ubisoft will diverge too far from the previous Far Cry games' successful formula, especially given the popularity of open-world games.

As far as release date is concerned, Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will be launched during the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2018. Beyond that, we know nothing about the release date.
