Agents of Mayhem Announces Release Date, Promises Over-The-Top Action

Finally, the action-packed, mayhem-filled spiritual successor to Saints Row is coming!

Agents of Mayhem will hit the stores on Aug. 15 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game is developed by Volition, the same studio that brought the adventure shooter Saints Row. Deep Silver remains the publisher while Square Enix will distribute the game in North America.

Mayhem follows the open world trend that has exploded in recent years, capped this March by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But it is not a wholesome RPG; it promises to bring over-the-top action, crude humor, and colorful visuals that made its predecessor Saints Row a hit franchise.

It Ain't The Saints

Agents of Mayhem announced the date of release via its Twitter account. It also included its first official video game trailer.

The game is set in the same universe as Saints Row but in a conceptualized futuristic, technological version of Seoul, Korea. The wacky humor, crass dialogue, and cheeky plotlines are still there.

"Explore the city of Seoul with a diverse cast of twelve interchangeable agents that you can assemble into squads of three, each with their own distinct look, sense of humor, weapons, and skillset," wrote Deep Silver in its official statement.

Mayhem stands for Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds, an agency (read: "agents") in charge of fighting the evil organization called LEGION. With the aid of technology and absurd gadgets and weapons, the mission is to bring down this supervillain group in the nastiest, flashiest, and most destructive way possible.

The developers also described the game as inspired by pop culture elements like "super heroes, comics and Saturday morning cartoons."

Prepare Yourselves, Agents

Players can build and outfit a squad of three based on 12 available agents with varying skills, specializations, and personalities. They can choose the "mini-gun wielding, beer-swigging, foul-mouthed roller derby girl" Daisy; bow-wielding immunologist Rama; or German soccer goon called Red Card. Other colorful and crazy agents to choose include a sky pirate, a thief, and a pretty boy from Hollywood.

The player can swap among these three characters anytime. And with some RPG touches, the player can customize the skills, weapon upgrades, and vehicles of his squad, as well as the ARK, the agents' HQ.

As an open world game, players can freely roam in the colorful, cyberpunk city of Seoul on foot, over buildings, or via vehicles. They can discover secret research centers, enemy bases, and other "nefarious plots to unravel." There will be Open World Missions, including one to destroy a huge doomsday weapon.
