Pokémon fans are in for an overwhelming nostalgia trip this Oct. 29. Pokémon: The First Movie will be reshown at over 200 Cinemark theaters, more than a decade after it was first shown in the late 90s.
As an accompanying precursor to the main feature, the short special Pikachu's Vacation will also be shown the same way it preceded the main feature premiered back in the day.
Millions of fans have fond memories of the movie, and reliving it inside a darkened theater replete with fellow Pokémon diehards will tug the hearts of both longtime fans and those who might have grown out of it since then.
In the movie, Mewtwo creates a collective army of clone Pokémon. The screenings will feature the original English dubs, but it won't include parts of The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin, portions of which have been appendaged and spliced in the film's home video releases. Additionally, Mewtwo's origin and extensive backstory with its fellow clone Amber won't be included in the upcoming screenings.
Pokémon: The First Movie will have a onetime screening on Oct. 29 and another on Nov. 1. The screenings will cost $5 per ticket and is available for preorder now. Pokémon fans itching to have their Pokémon-induced childhood memories stirred can go ahead and preorder now if they don't want to miss out.
Pokémon: The First Movie was one of the most popular films of the Pokémon franchise, scoring over $160 million worldwide at the box office. It was the highest-grossing film based on a video game until Lara Croft: Tomb Raider premiered in 2001, beating it out of the rank. Nineteen more Pokémon films followed the first one, with varying degrees of mileage as the popularity of the franchise fluctuated in the United States.
A digitally remastered version of Pokémon: The First Movie aired in Tokyo on May 2013 and on Cartoon Network in the United States on January 2014. The remastered version was released on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play on February this year.
Pokémon fans are eagerly awaiting the imminent release of The Pokémon Company's most recent mainline titles: Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. The games have been enjoying a steady torrent of pre-release teasers to rear the hype train, and fans have been in a constant uproar resulting from Alola, quite possibly the most interesting and unusual region ever to be featured in Pokémon.
Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will hit stores on Nov. 18, but a special demo version will be available on Nintendo's eShop on Oct. 18. For those who want to stave off their impatience over the eventual release of the main games, there's always Pokémon GO to play around with in the meantime.
